Overview

This teleconference, sponsored by the AHRQ National Resource Center for Health IT and moderated by Teresa Zayas-Caban of AHRQ, is the second in a three-part series on Personal Health Records (PHRs). The presenters, Kenneth Mandl of Children's Hospital in Boston and Jonathan Wald of Partners HealthCare, will talk about Children's Hospital Informatics Program's (CHIP) experience designing and implementing Indivo. Indivo is a personally controlled health record with the ability to integrate information from numerous and diverse healthcare databases. With an emphasis on strict patient control, it allows patients to maintain electronic copies of their records in a storage site of their choosing. CHIP is now collaborating with Dossia to adapt Indivo for its company employees and dependents. Also discussed will be Partners HealthCare's patient portal, Patient Gateway, and how it has fostered patient-provider communication and improved patient access to personalized information. Patient Gateway is linked to patients' electronic health record, giving providers and patients the opportunity to share and discuss a patient's health care needs and concerns. The presenters will describe the challenges they have encountered while implementing their PHRs, as well as the dialogue that has resulted between patients and healthcare providers.

Presidents Day 2008... what was HealthCare 150 years ago?

If a reporter questioned US Presidential candidate about HealthCare in mid 1800's, what would be responses? I sense the concerns were even greater then.. just think, no anti-biotic, surgeons often were not formally educated, more over learned "in the trenches".

I suspect that Mr. Lincoln would have thought it was "Personal Responsibility" of each citizen to educate themselves on the organic medications, elixirs and other new age medicine. hospital centers were sprouting up in major cities and the skills of nursing, scientist were making rampant progress. Perhaps a similar state of change that is prevalent circa 2008?

Doubt that looking 150+ years to the future, anyone could predict that America finds itself in a cost burdened, non-standard, technically challenged Health System.

1. How many of us will have just ONE employer during the next 10 years?
2. When you change jobs, what happens to all that good PHR data?
3. Does your employer have a multi generation PHR enhancement plan?
4. Is there a “chain of trust” between you and the company that issues your paycheck from Medical perspective?
5. What happens when / if that link of trust is broken.....

Do you remember the "4 Building blocks of Food Groups" circa 1970's ? That started in the elementary schools and was available on PBS channels all over. If we could get that rolling with PHR's then folks would be on board!

PHR mainstream in America? Going Global !!

It was a milestone event yesterday (4-Oct-2007) as Mr. Gates team unveiled a BETA product for PHRs. There has been a buzz about the industry of software and internet providers during last 5-6 months to get a "jump" on the market space. As we all have been impacted with a plethora of MS applications, it will be interesting to count how many hiccups and patches are required with this latest BETA.

As I digest the idea of `Philanthropic` Redmond WA executives (yet again) attempting to deliver a quick hit solution to major gap in the Medical Health IT field, it makes one wonder how the (older) practicing Dr's will embrace another gadget for the benefit of their patients. This is why we (VRSurgeon) have always set a high standard for our products: intuitive, quick and easy for all generations.

That is another point, this (PHR) is a service that must be centered on and for the patient. Look at how banking was revolutionized 10-15 years ago as security protocols provided means for transactions while sitting in the comfort & privacy of your home PC. The same is happening with Health Care today.

Simplicity, efficiency for the common citizen. This is bottom line.
